“Some airlines are walking away from what travelers love, but we're running towards it,” said Barry Biffle, president and CEO of Frontier Airlines
Frontier Airlines is taking advantage of its competition’s divisive policy change. In a statement obtained by PEOPLE, Frontier Airlines announced starting on Tuesday, March 18, through Aug. 18, passengers will be able to receive a new offering called the "Economy Bundle," which will include a “free carry-on bag, free seat selection, and free flight changes.” The budget airline is also including a free checked bag for flights departing on May 28 through Aug. 18. To take advantage of the special offer, travelers will need to book their flights by March 24.
“Some airlines are walking away from what travelers love, but we're running towards it,” said Barry Biffle, president and CEO of Frontier Airlines. “Think of this as the ultimate 'divorce your old airline' deal. If travelers show us the love, we'll make these perks permanent." “At the end of the day, travelers just want to be valued,” he added. “We're bringing back the things people love about flying – free bags, free seat selection, and flexibility – without the extra fees. No games, just great value.” The surprise deal comes a week after one of the company's closest competitors, Southwest Airlines, announced that it will be removing its universal free checked bag perk. In a March 11 news release, they stated that starting on May 28, 2025, travelers who aren’t enrolled in one of the airline’s loyalty programs or traveling business class will have to pay for each of their checked bags. The airline has yet to announce the cost of these new charges. For loyal Southwest travelers, the policy change may come as a surprise as the airline has been offering passengers free checked bags as a perk for flying with them for nearly six decades. The baggage update isn’t the only controversial change made by Southwest in recent months. In July 2024, Southwest announced that it will officially be ending its open-seating policy, which allows travelers to book seats on a first-come, first-served basis. According to a Sept. 2024 press release, the airline will begin selling assigned seats in the second half of 2025. However, passengers won’t see the reserved seating on their flights until the beginning of 2026.
